General Occultism / Re: Signs & Symbols

Very interesting... might i suggest Lacan and Lacanian Psychoanalysis (see Lacan mathemes and his use of Saussure's work, as well as Walter Benjamin's essay "On Language as such and the Language of Man" (its about magic and language, and names and symbols) - also indeed symbology is very fascinating, as a Freemason I am very aware of its uses, as well as an ex-comparative literature major... anyway, not sure if this is a dead thread or not so i am not going to post too much. But I work on this question, sometimes, via Modern Mythology (a group i am involved with, friend IRL as its said)... we look at symbols too... what i like is that you are looking at what some might consider mundane symbols and signs or rather sings that are in common contemporary usage... and its interesting because they are often overlooked... and speaking of the square as the Earth, did you know that Japan doesn't use the square to represent the earth, but rather instead of four corners of the earth they have the five corners of the earth - a pentagon. IDK. anyway, if this thread is still alive, let a brother know...

QuoteThe Lacanian Symbolic initially is theorized on the basis of resources provided by structuralism. Tied to natural languages as characterized by Saussure and specific post-Saussurians, this register also refers to the customs, institutions, laws, mores, norms, practices, rituals, rules, traditions, and so on of cultures and societies (with these things being entwined in various ways with language). Lacan's phrase "symbolic order," which encompasses all of the preceding, can be understood as roughly equivalent to what Hegel designates as "objective spirit." This non-natural universe is an elaborate set of inter-subjective and trans-subjective contexts into which individual human beings are thrown at birth (along the lines of Heideggerian Geworfenheit), a pre-existing order preparing places for them in advance and influencing the vicissitudes of their ensuing lives.

I originally thought (and told the op of this post, when they presented this challenge) that a soundbite wouldn't be helpful, and i forget what they said to get me to just go for it (and i am not looking back in the chat logs to find out) but i think i said, why not - fuck it, cause its not like Definitive or something, i think that is what the challenger said... anyway, yeah we totally understand (and so does the person who gave out the challenge)this whole Noam Chomskyesque made for tv-media-commercials reduction of language and thereby thought... butter-but w/e we did find the exercise interesting, even more interesting though is peoples reactions too it. We think there is a good point about the having to think and put forth idea-feelings about a topic in a limited time, as already stated - we are agreeing -- as well as understand the undesirability of reduction of thought/practice w/e to a soundbite.

I don't know if you will see this, but yes, Burroughs and Gysin are a good place to start. We have done some work with sigils in audio forms, and suggest looking at the work of AIN23's sound project, 23 minutes in Time. Also, if you contact us, via IRC sometime (look for At-Tawwad - in the #domus channel) we can talk about it, as that is much easier for us. We are also looking for a few texts we have on the subject because we are writing a piece on soundworking and magick for a new DKMU text. Anyway, when we do find the texts they will be posted on our Network share. Find us, or PM us here for that drive information.

General Occultism / Re: Everything you know in 5 minutes

I don't need five min. Magick is the use of emotive-thought will via trance states to effect change in the world, in the self through techniques that are meant to access the unconscious and keep the conscious mind from hampering desire-intention. Magick takes many forms and rituals that allow one to turn themselves into their desires, that is shit into gold. Magick allow one to see beyond what is know as flat sight, and can use mediation or drugs or other techniques to achieve desired results. Magick is an art, an art of as i will so mote it be. Magick is Lacanian Psychoanalysis meets chaos and difference... magick is and you are. the end
